无心剑

    悲哉行
   
    O Sadness
   
    白居易

    悲哉为儒者，力学不知疲。
    读书眼欲暗，秉笔手生胝。
   
    O sad to be a confucian scholar,
    Who has to be a tireless learner,
    Reading books until his eyes blur,
    Holding pen to get callous finger.
   
    十上方一第，成名常苦迟。
    纵有宦达者，两鬓已成丝。
   
    My tenth imperial exam changed my fate;
    I often felt embittered the fame came late.
    Even now my political career is so bright,
    The hair on my temples has turned white.
   
    可怜少壮日，适在穷贱时。
    丈夫老且病，焉用富贵为。
   
    Poor when I was young and strong,
    I had to endure miseries in throng.
    Now I turn old and suffer sickness,
    Wealth and honor become useless.
   
    沉沉朱门宅，中有乳臭儿。
    状貌如妇人，光明膏粱肌。
   
    Deep was a red-gate building,
    Where lived a small suckling.
    He had a ladylike appearance,
    With bright skin in fragrance.
   
    手不把书卷，身不擐戎衣。
    二十袭封爵，门承勋戚资。
   
   Reading books he couldn't bear;
    Army uniform he wouldn't wear.
    He inherited noble title at twenty
    And his father's wealth in plenty.
   
    春来日日出，服御何轻肥。
    朝从博徒饮，暮有倡楼期。
   
    He went out on every spring day indeed,
    Riding on such a sturdy and swift steed.
    He drank with gamblers every morning,
    Enjoying girls in brothel every evening.
   
    平封还酒债，堆金选蛾眉。
    声色狗马外，其余一无知。
   
    He exhausted his wealth in debt for wine,
    Squandering gold on girls extremely fine.
    In various sensual pleasures he would fall,
    Yet anything else he could not know at all.
   
    山苗与涧松，地势随高卑。
    古来无奈何，非君独伤悲。
   
    The hill grass and the valley pines grow,
    Only the position tells they're high or low.
    Down the ages this is always so hopeless,
    Not only you have suffered this sadness.
