SONNET. LV.
SO oft as I her beauty doe behold,
And therewith doe her cruelty compare:
I maruaile of what substance was the mould
the which her made attonce so cruell faire.
è So oft as I do behold her beauty, and therewith (with that) do compare her cruelty. I marvel of what substance the mould was the which (one) made her at once (together) so cruel fair.
Not earth; for her high thoghts more heauenly are,
not water; for her loue doth burne like fyre:
not ayre; for she is not so light or rare:
not fyre; for she doth friese with faint desire.
è
Not earth, for her high thoughts are more heavely,
Not water, for her love does burn like fire
Not air, for she is not so light or rare,
Not fire, for she does freeze with faint desire.
Then needs another Element inquire
whereof she mote be made; that is the skye.
for to the heauen her haughty lookes aspire:
and eke her mind is pure immortall hye.
->Then (it) needs another Element inquire whereof (of which) mote she is made; that is, the sky, for her haughty looks aspire to the heaven, and eke (also) her mind is pure immortal high.
Then sith to heauen ye lykened are the best,
be lyke in mercy as in all the rest.
è
Then, sith (since) ye likened to heaven are the best, be like in mercy as in all the rest.
