点评《理查二世》里的一句台词的翻译
      最近读《理查二世》的剧本时，参考了朱生豪，梁实秋和孙法理的译本。第一幕第一场第五十六行的The blood is hot that must be cool'd for this的翻译很令人费解。
      朱生豪：热血在胸膛里沸腾，准备因此而溅洒。人民文学出版社，《莎士比亚全集》（三），一九九四。
      梁实秋：为了这一争端，热血是一定要洒出来的。中国广播电视出版社，远东图书公司，《莎士比亚全集》（16），2001（在大陆出版）
      孙法理：要解决问题先得平息下沸腾的血液，（可我不能自诩有这样恭顺的耐心，能保持缄默，一言不发）。译林出版社，《莎士比亚全集》第三卷历史剧上。
     朱生豪是独立翻译莎剧的译者。梁实秋是胡适等主持的中华教育文化基金董事会所属编译委员会的一员。孙法理中国当代莎学研究的一员，《莎士比亚注释丛书》的一员，亲自注释了《理查二世》。
      是什么造成了翻译的巨大反差？这句话又是什么意思呢？我们先从比较权威的选本来看。
Let not my cold wordes here accuse my zeale,
Tis not the triall of a womans warre,
The bitter clamour of two eger tongues
Can arbitrate this cause betwixt vs twaine,
The bloud is hote that must be coold for this,
Yet can I not of such tame patience boast,
As to be huisht, and naught at all to say. (Quarto 1, 1595)
Let not my cold words heere accuse my zeale:

As to be hushed and naught at all to say. (现代版本大同小异，此本是随机的取样）
      也就是说The blood is hot that must be cooled for this在版本上看，无甚区别，不应造成理解上的偏差。
      这句话应该读作：The blood that must be cooled for this is hot. 原句把定语从句置后了。这种现象在莎剧中比比皆是，如第二幕第一场第八行的For they breathe truth that breathe their words in pain（真理往往是在痛苦呻吟中说出来的，朱生豪译；痛苦中说的话，其中必含至理，梁实秋译）, 应该读作For they that breathe their words in pain breathe truth.
     于是，这句话硬译过来就是需要平息(cool)的血液(blood)是沸腾的(hot)。反过来说，没有沸腾的血液也不必冷却。在前文中Henry Bolingbroke对Mowbray发难，语激词切。对此，Mowbray进行了选文中绵里藏针式的反击。
      从三位的译文来看，似乎曲解了莎士比亚的意思。九月二十二日。

我怀疑人民出版社的那个译本不是出自朱生豪之手，已经被篡改了。
