无材可去补苍天，枉入红尘若许年。
此系身前身后事，倩谁记去作奇传？
Too hum-/ble to /mend the/ azure/ sky,
So ma-/ny years /indulged /in this/ world.
All this /bounded/ with mor-/tal life /all times,
Who will/ record /them as/ a strange/ legend？
卷一之二 题《金陵十二钗》一绝
满纸荒唐言，一把辛酸泪。
都云作者痴，谁解其中味?
Full of /fantas-/tic words /within /th’ whole book,
Full of/ bitter/ tears on/ th’ suffer-/ing face.
All rea-/ders blame/ on au-/thor's wish-/ful look ,
Whose pain-/staking/ could a-/ny e-/ver chase？
卷一之三 太虚幻境石牌坊联语
假作真时真亦假，无为有处有还无。
A truth/ out of/ fiction/ is but/ the false/ shedding,
A being /from naught/ vanishes/ into/ only/nothing.
卷一之四 癞头僧嘲甄士隐
惯养娇生笑你痴，菱花空对雪澌澌。
好防佳节元宵后，便是烟消火灭时。
So pam-/pered child/ laughing/ with so/ naive,
Her glass/ mirrors/ melting/ white snows/ in vain,
Caring /the days /after/ the lan-/tern Feast，
All of/ fireworks/ should ex-/tinguish/ by then.
