Vows on the Pillow
To the tune of Pusaman (Bodhisat-like Savages)
Anonymous, a folksong from Dunhuang Music-Ci
Translated by Liang Yujing and Julian Farmer
On the pillow, we pledge,
in a thousand ways, not to part –
until the green mountains rot,
balance weights float on water,
the Yellow River dries up,
stars appear in daytime,
and the Plough goes to the south.
We’ll never part
unless the sun comes out at midnight.
