Winter Days

紫荆棘鸟

Cracked eyes, primeval leaves:
I pined for ginger flickers
Dancing off a jolly fire

A cold blast of fuzzy air
Had fixed me unawares –
Reinforcing my desire

Walking down a boulevard
I should froze? These doubtful trees –
expected & intended for a pyre –

Be laughing off the chilly chill
Of heartless Winter nights
And I? Betrayed only to retire

Cozy, inside the gentle chair
of warming isolation
from cold Christmas Eve:
Ah! my carol, my merry choir
