Selected Poems of ZHOU Jianhao Translated by WANG Changling
Spring Latent in Each Tree Spring latent in the tree Gets impatient Bit by bit from the twigs, buds to peep A nestling birdie spots it With a surprised chirp And a fizz, the birdie seizes spring
You are My Best Encounter A flower meets spring A droplet meets the sea A cloudlet meets the blue dome And I meet thee
Spring is sure to slip by The sea might be gone dry The blue sky can be occupied by rain But you are forever in my heart
If there’s an afterlife I pray I’ll meet thee again
On Mother’s Day, I Dare not Mention Mother
Mother! Mother! No matter how hard I’d howl No response could come
Only the old shabby shack Opened its door To embrace me The way Mother had done before
Not having the heart to hear my howl Just in front of the old shack The brook took an abrupt turn Whimpering away
A flowery Chinese scholar tree In this May Shed all its white Onto my shoulders
I had to force back with tears Mother, the word The very thought of which hurts me to the core Back into my heart
Urban Moonlight Light is beyond shadow Wind taps on my window To hand me a cup of moonlight
I drink it up Hometown River flows out of the bottom And instantly overfills my room
I am just an ant Clutching a fallen leaf Swimming upstream Towards hometown
The Wings of May Mountains open up their wings In the pose of flight Amid the sound of stem shooting Fly out of the green ocean
A flock of egrets Above the field Pecking and leading the mountains To soar up into the blue sky
My heart is winged Flapping towards the egrets
