Tune: Prelude of Nightingale Singing

The Rhine Quartet

By William He

Clusters of vines spiral upward,
Tinging the gulch and cliff.
Trees in leafy prime,
Quiet flow in the vales,
The currents are rippling the rocks.
Silhouette of castle ruins,
In Goethe's romanticized age,
In the mountain crag supported to this day.
Deep and thundering waves,
Slapping the Teuton on the back.

Looking upon the landscape clear,
Storks on roofs of blue and white,
There are eyes of cornflower in the woods.
The dance right featly,
The mountaintops are sparkling,
Her golden jewelry gleams and glints.
She stands by the firelight,
Surface gleamed with reflections,
On the foaming water,
She shines in her fairest trim.
The moment of exquisite bliss,
Freezing the sweetened and bitter screen,
Over the grim darkness the silence reigns.

The fascinating moonrise,
Pouring its streaming tide,
Wild bird calls on the woodland's side.
The tune is miraculous,
Music breathes from harp and flute,
A boat over the light wave sweeping,
Flower fades while the new bud blows,
Melopoeia renews itself in many ways.
Beneath the mooned ray,
Rolling the moated waters,
Gladdening all things with a Godhead's youth,
Playfulness and joy,
Alone the light of Platonic Heaven.
Upon him not forlorn,
Orpheus smooths the waves to theme,
Such beauty has the Eternal poured.

Grapes swelling from hour to hour,
A fine bouquet cross the green yarn,
Tossing their golden tendrils into my mind.
Low voice murmurs by,
The Life's wandering streams,
Memory wears the hues of Hope,
A world beyond the visual scope,
With the scars of many an age.
Schiller's passion and a dream,
The exulting glow has the rhyme,
Piping cheerly through the odorous leaves,
The Exalter as Consoler,
Building altar in one's heart.
Cheering the pilgrim's thirsty soul,
Oracles are stirring his blood,
Easy Rider with actual glory.

Notes
“Goethe”: One of the preeminent figures in German literature, poet, playwright, and novelist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1749.
“Golden Jewelry”: “The Loreley” or “Die Lorelei”, one of Heinrich Heine's famous poems, is based on a German legend of a beautiful maiden who threw herself into the Rhine River in despair over a faithless lover and was transformed into a siren who lured fishermen to destruction. It has been set to music by numerous composers, such as Friedrich Silcher and Franz Liszt.
“The Tune”: Moonlight Sonata, byname of Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 2: Sonata quasi una fantasia, solo piano work by Ludwig van Beethoven, admired particularly for its mysterious, gently arpeggiated, and seemingly improvised first movement.
“Melopoeia”: Ezra Pound's term for: the musical and rhythmic qualities of poetic language, especially as suited to the tone or mood of the text.
“Godhead”: In theological studies, the term Godhead is used to refer to the concept of the Triune God, or one God in three Persons that include God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
“Platonic Heaven”: Plato’s heaven is one in which man is free from the imperfect physical, material world. Plato believed that man is primarily made up of soul, and that man’s soul is trapped in a body, much like being trapped in a prison. To Plato, salvation occurs when the soul is set free from this prison-body. The soul is then free to live in the realm of pure forms. And there, it “can behold the absolute Good, the Pure Form.”
“Schiller”: In full Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, leading German dramatist, poet, and literary theorist, best remembered for such dramas as Die Räuber (1781; The Robbers), the Wallenstein trilogy (1800–01), Maria Stuart (1801), and Wilhelm Tell (1804).
“Easy Rider”: One of the most iconoclastic films of the 1960s directed by Dennis Hopper. Two bikers head from Los Angeles to New Orleans through the open country and desert lands, and along the way they meet a man who bridges a counter-culture gap of which they had been unaware.

The Lorelei
By Heinrich Heine
Translated by Aaron Kramer

I cannot explain the sadness
That's fallen on my breast.
An old, old fable haunts me,
And will not let me rest.

The air grows cool in the twilight,
And softly the Rhine flows on;
The peak of a mountain sparkles
Beneath the setting sun.

More lovely than a vision,
A girl sits high up there;
Her golden jewelry glistens,
She combs her golden hair.

With a comb of gold she combs it,
And sings an evensong;
The wonderful melody reaches
A boat, as it sails along.

The boatman hears, with an anguish
More wild than was ever known;
He's blind to the rocks around him;
His eyes are for her alone.

At last the waves devoured
The boat, and the boatman's cry;
And this did with her singing,
The golden Lorelei.
