Seven-words Poem

The Mourning Day

Last year's leaves are smoke on top of hill,

Stillness yearns for the departed saint here.

When melancholy drowns inside my heart,

It lives falling out of the skin into the weird.

Departing temptation The Way of All Flesh,

Then the tempest-tossed soul comes to rest.

It matters not whatever Gladiator is idolized,

Obscurely as uncanny Somnus embellished.

清明

青烟郁悒绕山头，

翠柏新阡草色幽。

心雨绵绵分祭酹，

离殇恨恨合香篝。

牵缠尘世浮华去，

遮隔泉台纸鹤留。

最是鬼雄冥国里，

也多欢楚也多愁。

Note:

“The Way of All Flesh”：A semi-autobiographical novel by Samuel Butler that attacks Victorian-era hypocrisy. Hailed by George Bernard Shaw as "one of the summits of human achievement,"  Butler's autobiographical account of a harsh upbringing and troubled adulthood satirizes Victorian hypocrisy in its chronicle of the life and loves of Ernest Pontifex. Along the way, it offers a powerful indictment of 19th-century England's major institutions.

"Gladiator": Gladiator is a 2000 epic historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni,John Logan,and William Nicholson. Crowe portrays Hispano-Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is betrayed when Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery,Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murders of his family and his emperor.

"Somnus": Papaver somniferum. Papaver is Latin for poppy. Somniferum is from the Latin somnus (sleep) and ferre. (bring) or"inducing sleep” referring to the narcotic. properties of the opium resin in the fruit of this plant.

英国上议院托斯科特勋爵点评拙诗《七律·清明》英文版。

何先生：
值此清明之际，我对您和您的家人对祖先的拜祭深表敬意。
尽管我们本周与中国驻英国大使进行了有趣的会谈，但是英国议会对脱欧的表决让我们忙的不可开交。
这是一首凄婉忧郁但震撼人心的诗词，它对人类的生死观进行了睿智的反思。引入注目的是，这首诗以好莱坞著名电影《角斗士》的主人公作为典故，以传统的罂粟花作为意象, 诗的注释中甚至还提到了英国大文豪乔治·伯纳德·萧伯纳（对塞缪尔•巴特勒的经典名著《众生之路》）的评价。萧伯纳去世之前一直住在英国伦敦白厅街的寓所，我家和他曾是邻居。

Dear William,
My respects to you and your family on yesterday’s Mourning Day and commemoration of your ancestors.
We have had a very hectic week in Parliament over Brexit,although it was an interesting week beginning with a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador.
I appreciate the somber yet haunting tone of your poem, it makes one reflect on mortality, and noted the references to Gladiator (a film I know well), plus the reference to the classical Somnus and even George Bernard Shaw in the footnotes. Just as a footnote of my own, George Bernard Shaw lived in our apartment block in Whitehall Court in London until his passing (as did HG Wells).
