Tune: Six Toughies

The Statue of Liberty

By William He

Mind brushed by bald eagle wings,
Binding the fearful throats,
Until her pedestal sheds kind light.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
The Mephisto is taking a few breaths,
Robed lady can not dispel doubts.
Coming to propitiate the divine wrath,
Plaints scud across the Milky Way,
She is deeply penitent and feeling sad.
Who will eventually find a way for the losts.
The brilliance there we can not see,
The waves become a beating kept.
When day's oppression is eased by night.
Lustrous halo dipped into the Hudson,
She as if in bittersweet repose then.

The labyrinthine path in the past.
Filling with infinite yearning even.
Assimilating into her vast melting pot,
Sweet unity awoken once.
Turning satanic in an inverse Garden of Eden.
If Helenus' house against the Ismaelite,
Gretchen is shape-shifting jinn.
First echoes are still,
Hollowed purple hearts.
Just to console herself,
Above her shook starry lights at that time,
She overheard the torrents meet.
Manifesto in hand is fading,
Time to shift her in storage cold.
Marianne carries the flame,
And tunes her global anthem,
All the suspicion and angst.

Notes:
"Mephisto": Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Mephisto is different from the crude devil of medieval legend and the original Faust story. He is a cynical exponent of materialism and nihilism, and preaches a sophisticated doctrine of philosophical negation. Mephisto's most outstanding characteristic is skepticism; the inability to believe in anything.
"Helenus": Helenus was the son of King Priam of Troy and Queen Hecuba in Greek mythology, twin brother of the prophetess Cassandra. Cassandra, who had been given the gift of prophecy by Apollo, taught its secrets to Helenus; however, he was believed by others, unlike Cassandra who had been cursed not to be believed by anyone, even though her prophecies always came true.
"Ismaelite": Islamic traditions consider Ishmael as the ancestor of northern Arab people, while Jewish traditions are split between those who consider Ishmael their ancestor and those, like Maimonides, who believe that the Arabs are descended from the sons of Keturah, whom Abraham married after Sarah's death. Judaism has generally viewed Ishmael as wicked though repentant. Judaism maintains that Isaac (the father of the Jewish people) rather than Ishmael was the true heir of Abraham.
"Gretchen": Gretchen is a peasant girl with whom Faust falls madly in love. Gretchen represents the religious and moral society of common German life against which Faust is compared. Their relationship is destined for tragedy from the start as Faust tempts Gretchen away from her moral life.
"Jinn": Jinn (singular, jinni; also spelled djinni or genie) is an Arabic word that literally means “to hide.” Jinn are supernatural creatures found in Islamic and Arabic writings, particularly the Quran. The Quran says that the jinn were created from a “smokeless and scorching fire,” separately from humans or angels.
"Marianne": The figure of Liberty is also viewed as a symbol of France and the French Republic known as Marianne Photo of Liberty Leading the People at Louvre. The work was bought for three thousand francs at the Salon of 1831 by Louis Philippe, for the Royal Museum, then in the Palais du Luxembourg, and was transferred to the Louvre in 1874.

落叶如积。束炬青、恍惚人难晓,碎声屑涕。
拜读先生佳作,似乎又到哈德逊河口。

Down by the Salley Gardens
By William Butler Yeats

Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.

In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.
