Seeing Spring Off on the Last Day of the Third Moon
by Jia Dao
Just on the thirtieth day of the third moon,
Spring will leave hard-chanting me so soon.
Tonight you and I should always stay awake;
It is still spring till the bell heralds daybreak.
When March comes to the thirtieth day,
To chanters like me spring bids farewell.
Sleepless tonight you and I should stay,
It is still spring ere the toll of dawn-bell.

It is exactly the thirtieth day of the third moon,
When good time parts me who dolefully croon.
Through the night you and I shall stay up today
For it is still spring ere bell tolls in the morn ray.
It comes to the thirtieth day of March again,
Spring bids a painstaking chanter goodbye,
No sleep tonight you and I’ll have to remain,
For no dawn bell means summer isn’t nigh.
