Fire and Ice
冰与火
by Robert Frost
罗伯特·弗罗斯特
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire,
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
and would suffice

I also think that desire is likened to be fire and hate is likened to be ice in this poem.
Now we are taught that the more we have from the outside ourselves, the happier we will be, and then we are made to want. It can be seen that wild desires are created in many ways every day. Many of our potential desires have been aroused. When wild desires cannot be fulfilled, some tragedies are on the way.
In fact, happiness is not simply the fulfillment of our numerous desires. Robert Frost, a great American poet, thinks that happiness lies in the pleasure of taking pains. Yeats, a great Irish poet, once put it, happiness we get for a lifetime depends on how high we choose our difficulties. We should keep a basic fact in mind: No difficulty, no happiness.
In my opinion, enormous greed results in wild desire, and the unfulfilment of desire results in hate. I believe the destructive power of wild desire and strong hate suffices to end the world.
I don't deny that happiness can be enjoyed in a simple life. It is not easy to lead a simple life in the face of temptations from beauty, money and power. Only wise men are able to understand and resist those temptations, thus live a simple but meaningful life. Driven by desires, many of us are reduced to slaves of those temptations and unable to lead a simple life. Therefore, I am still convinced that there is no happiness without difficulty.
Simple, good; simpler, better; simplest, best. It is hard to live a simple life; it is harder to live a simpler life; it is the hardest to live a simplest life. Wisdom is greatly needed to set foot on a long journey from simple to simpler to simplest.
