"Stay close to the poem" is stated as the foremost principle in poetry translation. This said, and relatively the same point said in many other articles and books, it ramains the top arguing or debating topic lists. What are the components to assemble a "stay close to the poem"?What are the aspects we need to get close and how they rank in importance? In what way can we, poetry translators, do to achieve this "closest possible"? I hope moderator 卧龙 can initiate a discussion here.
As for now, my mind gathers a few tihings I would like to share with 卧龙 and all the friends here:
1. Meaning, in terms of words, phrases, sentences, idioms, even literary quotations should be kept as close as possible;
2. Spirit, in terms of images, allusions, reflections from all the physical words, the enlightenment, insights are to be as close as possible;
3. Style, in terms of poetry genres: classical, modern; romantic, realistic, impressionistic, abstractionistic, imagist, post-modern, etc. as well as in terms of language artistic genres: ironic, comic, tragic, blue and dark, rhetorical device, archaic, cunning, sarcastic, etc.
4. Form, in terms of metrical, free style, blank verse, etc. As I personally believe form is a part of the contents of a poem, I regard form as a very important aspect in the complete profile of a translated poem.
Well, so much for now. I am expecting more inputs so to launch a meaningful discussion that will benifit all of us. |
