Tune: Prelude of Nightingale Singing

Song of the Lofty Mountain

By William He

Misty smoke floats over the mountain,
Illuminated by the white clouds.
Unfathomable precipices,
Amber shades and swaying leaves,
Amidst the thickening of viridity well.
Stalwart and mighty,
As it rages down streams,
Sounds of water splashing against rocks.
Washing over the dense jungles,
The crimson drops of crystal now.

Sunset reflects on that lake,
Across mudflats and swamps,
Round it the greenish water spread.
With mere paint,
Blowing gaudy colored leaves,
Amazing Aquatic features home.
Providing sanctuary for us,
A whirlwind of snow-silver storms.
The wind is rising,
Blowing gaudy colored leaves.
Above snow clad peaks,
Black storks are ethereal,
Golden eagles soar into view.

Lichens growing on bunkers,
The ashes the partridges flew,
The sad words of a funeral hymn.
Auld Lang Syne,
Through the foggy Hump,
Aluminum Trail dazzling,
The opaque shadows there,
Chanting by shronding wave.
Redeeming souls for heaven,
In obedience to the Holy Will.
Turmoil covers my eyes and my heart,
Flying tigers set out,
Growing more ominous even.
Their graves voice,
They swooped through the sky,
Wrecks landed all over the shop.

Spruces and hemlocks,
Crags gurgling streams,
All reach for the rays of light.
On Salween River,
Shimmers bounce all around,
Laborious terrains and mounds,
The tinted cliffs are standing,
Up above where clouds roam.
Staring at lad's retreating figure,
The colored fairy lass retraces,
Romance in outstretched arm of wood.
When foliages turn yellow,
A wrench parting with them.
Until the fat lady sings afterglow,
Bell in the gilded columns,
Beating the invisible green.

Notes:
"Lofty Mountain": Goaligong Mountain is located in the Szechwan Highlands in the southern part of China. Its highest elevation reaches over 4,000 metres and this upper part of the mountain is designated as the core area. Evergreen broad-leaved forests, deciduous forests and bamboo woodlands are characteristic of the region. Because of the difficulty to reach the area, the forests and the wildlife are well protected. Among the most protected species are the red panda (Ailurus fulgens) and the clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa).
"Hump": The Hump was the Himalayas, the forbidding mountain range separating India and China, and the pilots flew the Hump to maintain the Allies' fragile foothold in Asia during the bad times of World War II.
"Aluminum Trail": The U.S. Army Air Forces’ Air Transport Command (ATC) had been struggling with the C-46, which ATC pilots dubbed the “Curtiss Calamity” and “Flying Coffin.” Even technical experts from Curtiss-Wright were afraid to fly in their aircraft over the "Hump"—the line of Himalayan mountains and Burmese jungles that had to be crossed at great risk to resupply the Nationalist Chinese. Hump pilots, wrote Sevareid, "could plot their course to China by the line of smoking wrecks upon the hillsides."Others sardonically termed it the "aluminum trail."
"Auld Lang Syne": Scottish song with words attributed to the national poet of Scotland, Robert Burns. In 1788 the Robert Burns sent the poem 'Auld Lang Syne' to the Scots Musical Museum, indicating that it was an ancient song but that he'd been the first to record it on paper. The song is all about preserving old friendships and looking back over the events of the year.
"Salween River": Chinese Nu Jiang, major stream of Southeast Asia and the longest in Myanmar (Burma). Rising in the T’ang-ku-la Mountains, a range of eastern Tibet, the river flows generally south for about 1,500 miles (2,400 km) through Yunnan province, China, and eastern Myanmar, emptying into the Gulf of Martaban of the Andaman Sea at Moulmein. In its lower course the river forms the frontier between Myanmar and Thailand for about 80 miles (130 km).
"Afterglow": A song in which Taylor Swift is basically acknowledging her own shortcomings in a romantic relationship. Or more specifically, she is for the most part taking the blame for the relationship with the man she loves dissolving. Thus she is apologizing to her lover and begging his forgiveness, as she is still very much in love.

Song of the Lonely Mountain
Neil Finn

Far over the Misty Mountains rise
Lead us standing upon the height
What was before we see once more
Is our kingdom a distant light
Fiery mountain beneath a moon
The words unspoken spoken, we'll be there soon
For home a song that echoes on
And all who find us will know the tune
Some folk we never forget
Some kind we never forgive
Haven't seen the back of us yet
We'll fight as long as we live
All eyes on the hidden door
To the Lonely Mountain borne
We'll ride in the gathering storm
Until we get our long forgotten gold
We lay under the Misty Mountains cold
In slumbers deep, and dreams of gold
We must awake, our lives to make
And in the darkness a torch we hold
From long ago where lanterns burned
Until this day our hearts have yearned
A fate unknown, the Arkenstone
What was stolen must be returned
We must away ere break of day
To find our song for heart and soul
Some folk we never forget
Some kind we never forgive
Haven't seen the end of it yet
We'll fight as long as we live
All eyes on the hidden door
To the Lonely Mountain borne
We'll ride in the gathering storm
Till we get our long forgotten gold
Far away the Misty Mountains cold
