The Song of Everlasting Regret
漢王重色思傾國，
御宇多年求不得．
楊家有女出長成，
養在深閨人未識．
The emperor of Han lusted for a belle whose beauty 'd top in his empire,
He had sought for years for such a drop-dead in vain to meet his desire.
A maiden in the Yang family at that time just reached her puberty age,
As she was reared deep in her bower, no one knew this gorgeous teenage.
天生麗質難自棄，
一朝選在君王側．
回眸一笑百媚生，
六宮粉黛無顏色．
It'd be extremely hard to relinquish her God's given gift forever.
So one day she was chosen to serve at the side of the Emperor.
As she turned with a smile, all kinds of irisistable spells came to pass,
The glamor of all ladies in the six palaces she took no effort to outclass.
春寒賜浴華清池，
溫泉水滑洗凝脂；
侍兒扶起嬌無力，
始是新承恩澤時。
She was granted a bath in Hua-Qing-Pool on a cold day of spring,
Washing her creamy skin with warm spring water smoothly moving.
Deliciously languorous,so out of the pool she was helped and led,
And then it was her very first time to join the emperor in his bed.
雲鬢花顏金步搖，
芙蓉帳暖度春宵；
春宵苦短日高起，
從此君王不早朝。
Rosy face with dark-cloud-hair, she walked around with her bling-bling,
At night under the hibiscus canopy the hot intimacy they were enjoying.
When sun rose high, they were whining why the spring night was so short.
From this day on the Emperor neglected his morning councils at Court.
承歡侍宴無閑暇，
春從春遊夜專夜。
後宮佳麗三千人，
三千寵愛在一身。
From banquet to bed she busily changed her role between a toy and joy,
Excursion everyday in spring; every night a fun-mate for emperor to enjoy.
Emperor possessed three thousand belles in waiting in the harem,
Yet only one got the fullest attention and affection from his spectrum.
金屋妝成嬌侍夜，
玉樓宴罷醉和春。
姊妹弟兄皆列土，
可憐光彩生門戶。
In Golden Chamber she dressed up to serve the emperor at night so fain,
At Jade Tower after feasts they'd indulge in love life like cloud with rain*.
All her sisters and brothers were therefore rewarded land and title of lord,
Royal prerogative bestowed on the Yang family was very much adored.
遂令天下父母心，
不重生男重生女。
驪宮高處入青雲，
仙樂風飄處處聞。
Her successful saga had an impact on parents from all walks of life.
So a baby girl was much more craved for by any husband and wife.
The Palace on Li mountain towered into the blue clouds high there.
The ethereal melodies carried by the wind was heard everywhere.
緩歌慢舞凝絲竹，
盡日君王看不足。
漁陽鼙鼓動地來，
驚破霓裳羽衣曲。
Strings and bamboo instrument accompanied slow dance and soft song,
The Emperor could never ever enjoy enough of these shows all day long.
One day the war drums from Yuyang struck so loud as to shake the ground,
Which shattered the tune of Rainbow and Feather Raiment floating around.
九重城闕煙塵生，
千乘萬騎西南行。
翠華搖搖行復止，
西出都門百餘里；
Dust and smoke filled the high-walled imperial capital in unrest,
As thousands of carriages and horsemen fled towards southwest.
As the retinue moved on, the brilliant blue banners led the way.
Which was forced to halt at the west of the capital thirty miles away.
六軍不發無奈何？
宛轉蛾眉馬前死。
花鈿委地無人收，
翠翹金雀玉搔頭。
Troops refused to advance which seemed more hopeless indeed.
The crown had to strangle his sobbing beauty before his steed.
Her jewelry scattered all over the ground yet no one would care,
Among which was a green jade hairpin with a gold sparrow so rare.
君王掩面救不得，
回看血淚相和流。
黃埃散漫風蕭索，
雲棧縈紆登劍閣。
The emperor had no choice but to sacrifice her; he sadly covered his face,
Blood dripped and tears dropped when he looked back at the very place.
The yellow dust was whirling and swirling in the chilly wind wailing aloud,
The retinue climbed to Sword Pass by the wooden steps spiralling to cloud.
峨嵋山下少人行，
旌旗無光日色薄。
蜀江水碧蜀山青，
聖主朝朝暮暮情。
Below the Emei mountain where travelers were hardly seen,
The imperial banners lost their brilliance in the weak sunlit scene.
Yet Shu mountain was still green and Shu river remained blue,
Day and night the emperor's ardent love for his belle still grew.
行宮見月傷心色，
夜雨聞鈴腸斷聲。
天旋地轉迴龍馭，
到此躊躇不能去。
Viewing the moon from the provisionl palace aggravated his woes,
Hearing the wind bell chime in rainy nights deepened his sorrows.
Finally the dragon carriage returned as if the turning earth and sky,
Tarrying on the very spot, the crown was unwilling to say goodbye.
馬嵬坡下泥土中，
不見玉顏空死處。
君臣相顧盡霑衣，
東望都門信馬歸。
At the foot of the Mawei Slope, digging deep in the ground,
In hope of seeing her pretty face but nothing like that was found.
Emperor and courtiers faced each other, their robes wet with tearstain,
Then they rode on eastwards, and back to the capital gate again.
歸來池苑皆依舊，
太液芙蓉未央柳；
芙蓉如面柳如眉，
對此如何不淚垂？
Back home, lo, the pond and garden remained the same as before,
Taiye's hibiscus and Weiyang's willows were still there like of yore.
A hibiscus petal was her face and a willow leaf was her eyebrow,
How could he stop shedding his tears while looking at these now?
春風桃李花開日，
秋雨梧桐葉落時。
西宮南內多秋草，
落葉滿階紅不掃。
When spring breeze blew, peach and plum were in full bloom,
When autumn rain came, plane tree leaves fell to their doom.
To choke the West and South Palaces autumn weeds grew tall,
To sweep steps covered by the red leaves no one bother at all.
梨園子弟白髮新，
椒房阿監青娥老。
夕殿螢飛思悄然，
孤燈挑盡未成眠。
The performers of the imperial troupe had more white hair,
The maids and eunuchs for belle's boudoir grew older there.
As fireflies flew in the hall at night, he was lost in his heartache,
As the solitary candle burnt itself out yet he still stayed awake.
遲遲鐘鼓初長夜，
耿耿星河欲曙天。
鴛鴦瓦冷霜華重，
翡翠衾寒誰與共？
The bell and drum shilly-shallied to toll to wake up the long night,
The Milky Way was still bright as the dawn spitted out its first light.
The heavy cold frost covered the mandarin-duck-tiles on the roof,
The lonely emerald quilts were cold, could anything be chill-proof?
悠悠生死別經年，
魂魄不曾來入夢。
臨邛道士鴻都客，
能以精誠致魂魄；\r
Years gone by since their life and death parting so extreme,
Yet her soul had never ever visited him even in his dream.
A Taoist from Lingqiong who now visited the capital was said
To be capable of summoning the spirits of the dead.
為感君王輾轉思，
遂教方士殷勤覓。
排空馭氣奔如電，
升天入地求之遍；
Greatly touched by the emperor's constant yearning for her,
So the courtiers asked this Taoist to find her wheresoever.
As fast as lightening he rode on the air into the earth and space,
He was searching for her in every possible place.
樓閣玲瓏五雲起，
其中綽約多仙子。
中有一人字太真，
雪膚花貌參差是。
Beautiful towers rose high in veil of five-colour-cloud,
Where there were so many gorgeous fairies in crowd.
And fortunately one of them, Taizhen was her name,
With belle's flowery face and snowy skin nearly the same.
金闕西廂叩玉扃，
轉教小玉報雙成。
聞道漢家天子使，
九華帳裡夢魂驚；
Of the west bower in golden palace he knocked on the jade-door,
From Xiaoyu* to Shuangcheng* a message was sent to her floor.
As she was told an envoy of the Han emperor was asking for a call,
She was startled from her dream in the splendour canopy in her hall.
攬衣推枕起徘徊，
珠箔銀屏迤邐開。
雲鬢半偏新睡覺，
花冠不整下堂來。
She pushed the pillows aside to grab her gown but dillydallied to arise,
Then her silver screens and pearl curtains shillyshallied to open and rise.
As she just awoke, her cloud-like hairsyle was half-way askew;
Walking into the hall, her crown ornaments were all awry, too.
風吹仙袂飄飄舉，
猶似霓裳羽衣舞。
玉容寂寞淚闌干，
梨花一枝春帶雨。
Her fairy sleeves were billowing in wind so elegant,
As if she was dancing her Rainbow and Feather Raiment.
Yet loneliness imprinted on her pretty face with tearstains,
Like a pear blossom was drenched in spring rains.
