“自娱自乐“老兄的版本挺好! 第一二句尤其出彩，只是字句比我的还lengthy呢！坦白说，英诗很少有一韵到底的，显得有点急促。中国古诗一韵到底的倒很多，比如七言的“柏梁台体”之类。

Why does the golden zither have fifty strings?
Each string, each peg recalls my past springs.
In the dawn dream I feel lost to be a butterfly;
A lovesick heart melts my grief in cuckoo's cry.
In the moonlit sea mermaids shed pearly tears;
At the sunlit Blue Field the misty jade appears.
Even if I try to revive such feeling in my mind,
Only obscured traces of that time could I find!

The broken zither without the head rests the fifty strings
Each of which seems to pluck each my past spring.
Like sage Zhuangzi I flutter into thy dream as the butterflies;
Like Emperor Du I fill my grief into the crying cuckoos.
Thy tears sank in the sea to be pearls as crystal as moon;
Thy scent smokes in the warm air as blue as buried jade.
Oh, feeling, no way to take thee away from my mind alone.
But now I am at a loss like a zither silent without a head.

至于the 算不算音节，视情况而定。
我们先顶一个目标，----------- 写抑扬格！四步、五步、六步都无所谓，先定下来目标是抑扬格。抑扬格。。。我再强调一下，不是扬抑格！

10           /  10           / 10     / 01        /01                这句需要多一个抑扬格音步
Each string/ each stop /was bear-/ing my /past springs!

10          / 10            / 10       /01     /00                     这句需要调整，不管是扬抑还是抑扬格，最后的音步不能抑抑格

注意： the 算不算音节，从上面的两行能看出，要视情况而定。在句首是不能不算的。 而“ring the vast” 那里就不能算，算了整个句子的音步就乱了，也不能形成抑扬格诗行了。
How can/ I re-/call this /view in/ my mind？
10       / 00    /10          / 10  /     01               问题在于你以扬抑格开头，却以抑扬格结尾。要想写格律诗，必须保证一头一尾是同样的轻重格式。

尽管各位译作不同，但对“无端”的翻译都是一致的"Why".
但我认为，“无端”不一定是“为何”。
一般Zither 只有25根弦，但这里是50根，说明是断成二半的zither, 或断了弦的Zither, 首尾不相连。而这也代表了诗人的50岁的年龄。暗示他过去不如意的岁月或爱情。
对于主题，不知各位认为是写人生仕途呢，还是写爱情？本人认为是写他难忘的逝去的爱情。因为“琴”即暗示“情”。呵呵，我是瞎琢磨的，不一定正确，但各位自有高论。

呵呵呵，Louisa, 既聪明又可爱！
这个说法也对也不对。对呢，是因为确实可以利用这些小词，即介词、冠词、助动词等，来帮忙，熟练地穿插，不留痕迹，以达到轻重相间的目的。
不对呢，是因为，即使这样，有时也不灵。你放多了，五音步会变成六音步，放少了，有些地方还不允许，比如你那个 the same 的 the, 必须有； 还有，位置一旦不好，最坏事的情形是，把原来一个抑扬格的诗行，弄成了扬抑格的。比如我这句：
No Huns’ steeds could have crossed Mt Yin ‘n survive.
如果 改成
No Huns’ steeds could've crossed Mt Yin and survive. (就是玩小词，have 和 and）
这样就成了
No Huns’ / steeds could've / crossed Mt / Yin and / survive. 同样是五音步，但

一下子就出来三个扬抑格，虽然一头一尾还都是iamb，但这句诗行已经不能称为抑扬格诗行了，因为抑扬格音步占少数。

许渊冲翻译的《山居秋暝》就很得当地省去了很多定冠词。因为是general的泛指，然后再加上用复数，而巧妙在，名词用了复数还不增加音节！ 你看他的这四句：
Among pine trees bright moonbeams peer; 用复数名词，而 trees beams 并不曾加音节
Over crystal stones flows water clear. 又是用复数 stones， 省略了 the
Bamboos whisper of washer-maids;       复数 bamboos
Lotus stirs when fishing boat wades.      这里就是那种泛指意义，lotus 不加冠词，既不是一支莲 a ，也不是 那支莲 the，而复数 lotuses 就多了一个音节。

在翻譯詩詞前﹐先把中文意思弄清楚。如“無端”﹐意為﹕不知何故﹐講不出道理。
所以不是問句。英文裡有個詞 SOMEHOW﹐大家為什麼都不用。

至於瑟由50絃變成25絃恐怕不必由翻譯者去研究。這跟翻譯的內容毫無關係。我的
看法是﹐翻譯不要把自己的思想弄得太複雜﹐原文沒說到的情況根本不用去想。否
則會把自己的思維搞複雜﹐從而搞糊塗。集中思想把原文表達的話譯出來就夠了。
