汉王重色思倾国，
御宇多年求不得．
杨家有女出长成，
养在深闺人未识．
Appreciating feminine charms,
The Han emperor sought a great beauty.
Throughout his empire he searched
For many years without success.
Then a daughter of the Yang family
Matured to womanhood.
Since she was secluded in her chamber,
None outside had seen her.
天生丽质难自弃，
一朝选在君王侧．
回眸一笑百媚生，
六宫粉黛无颜色．
Yet with such beauty bestowed by fate,
How could she remain unknown?
One day she was chosen
To attend the emperor.
Glancing back and smiling,
She revealed a hundred charms.
All the powdered ladies of the six palaces
春寒赐浴华清池，
温泉水滑洗凝脂；
侍儿扶起娇无力，
始是新承恩泽时。
One cold spring day she was ordered
To bathe in the Huaqing Palace baths.
The warm water slipped down
Her glistening jade-like body.
When her maids helped her rise,
She looked so frail and lovely,
At once she won the emperor’s favour.
云鬓花颜金步摇，
芙蓉帐暖度春宵；
春宵苦短日高起，
从此君王不早朝。
Her hair like a cloud,
Her face like a flower,
A gold hair-pin adorning her tresses.
Behind the warm lotus-flower curtain,
They took their pleasure in the spring night.
Regretting only the spring nights were too short;
Rising only when the sun was high;
He stopped attending court sessions
In the early morning.
承欢侍宴无闲暇，
春从春游夜专夜。
后宫佳丽三千人，
三千宠爱在一身。
Constantly she amused and feasted with him,
Accompanying him on his spring outings,
Spending all the nights with him.
Though many beauties were in the palace,
More than three thousand of them,
All his favours were centred on her.

The beauty-loving monarch longed year after year
To find a beautiful lady without peer.
A maiden of the Yangs* to womanhood just grown,
In inner chambers bred, to the world was unknown.
天生丽质难自弃，
一朝选在君王侧．
回眸一笑百媚生，
六宫粉黛无颜色．
Endowed with natural beauty too hard to hide,
One day she stood selected for the monarch’s side.
Turning her head, she smiled so sweet and full of grace
That she outshone in six palaces the fairest face.
春寒赐浴华清池，
温泉水滑洗凝脂；
侍儿扶起娇无力，
始是新承恩泽时。
She bathed in glassy water of warm-fountain pool,
Which laved and smoothed her creamy skin when spring was cool.
Upborne by her attendants, she rose too faint to move,
And this was when she first received the monarch’s love.
云鬓花颜金步摇，
芙蓉帐暖度春宵；
春宵苦短日高起，
从此君王不早朝。
Flowerlike face and cloudlike hair, golden-headdressed,
In lotus-flower curtain she spent the night blessed.
She slept till sun rose high, for the blessed night was short,
From then on the monarch held no longer morning court.
承欢侍宴无闲暇，
春从春游夜专夜。
后宫佳丽三千人，
三千宠爱在一身。
In revels as in feasts she shared her lord’s delight,
His companion on trips and his mistress at night.
In inner palace dwelt three thousand ladies fair;
On her alone was lavished royal love and care.

A girl in the Yang family just grew up,
Not known to anyone, being raised in deep boudoir.

回眸一笑百媚生，
六宫粉黛无颜色．
Born too beautiful to be married commonly,
She was eventually chosen at the side of the emperor.
One glance back from her beams one hundred kinds of charm,
And the beauty of all the ladies in the six palaces1 was shadowed.
春寒赐浴华清池，
温泉水滑洗凝脂；
侍儿扶起娇无力，
始是新承恩泽时。
In still cold spring she took a bath in the pool of Hua Qing2,
Her smooth skin bathed in the warm spring water.
So delicate, she was helped up by her maids,
That’s the first time she enjoyed the love of the emperor.
云鬓花颜金步摇，
芙蓉帐暖度春宵；
春宵苦短日高起，
从此君王不早朝。
Cloud-like hair, flower-like face, golden dangling ornament,
Spring nights all spent under the warm lotus canopy.
The nights were too short and the sun rose high,
The emperor neglected his morning levee ever since.
承欢侍宴无闲暇，
春从春游夜专夜。
后宫佳丽三千人，
三千宠爱在一身。
Pleasing and waiting on the emperor at feast, she got no moment to spare,
Spring outing every day, sleeping with the emperor every night.
There were three thousand fairs in the harem,
But the love of the three thousands centered on one.

He had sought for years for such a drop-dead in vain to meet his desire.
A maiden in the Yang family at that time just reached her puberty age,
As she was reared deep in her bower, no one knew this gorgeous teenage.
天生丽质难自弃，
一朝选在君王侧．
回眸一笑百媚生，
六宫粉黛无颜色．
It'd be extremely hard to relinquish her God's given gift forever.
So one day she was chosen to serve at the side of the Emperor.
As she turned with a smile, all kinds of irresistable spells came to pass,
The glamor of belles in the six palaces she took no effort to outclass.
春寒赐浴华清池，
温泉水滑洗凝脂；
侍儿扶起娇无力，
始是新承恩泽时。
She was granted a bath in Hua-Qing-Pool on a cold day of spring,
Washing her creamy skin with warm spring water smoothly moving.
Deliciously languorous, so out of the pool she was carefully led,
And then it was her very first time to join the emperor in his bed.
云鬓花颜金步摇，
芙蓉帐暖度春宵；
春宵苦短日高起，
从此君王不早朝。
Rosy face with dark-cloud-hair, she walked around with her bling-bling,
At night under the hibiscus canopy the hot intimacy they were enjoying.
When the sun rose high, they whined why the spring night was so short.
Ever since the emperor neglected the morning councils at his court.
承欢侍宴无闲暇，
春从春游夜专夜。
后宫佳丽三千人，
三千宠爱在一身。
From banquet to bed she busily changed her role betwix a toy and joy,
Excursion everyday in spring; every night a mate for emperor to enjoy.
Emperor possessed three thousand belles in waiting in the harem,
Yet only one got the fullest attention and affection from his spectrum.

With ineffaceable heavenly beauty of her own,

Her natural beauty was so hard for her to hide
That one day she was chosen to the Emperor's side.
As she glanced back, a smile emitted charm everywhere
That all belles in the six palaces were outshone into despair.

温泉水滑洗凝脂。
侍儿扶起娇无力，
始是新承恩泽时。
Granted to bathe in Huaqing Pool in spring chilly,
She let glassy hotspring wash her skin so creamy.
Upborne by her maids, she looked so frail and lovely
That she began to be favored by the Emperor lavishly.
云鬓花颜金步摇，
芙蓉帐暖度春宵。
春宵苦短日高起，
从此君王不早朝。
O flowery face, cloudlike hair and hairpins of golden light!
In lotus-flower curtain they enjoyed romantic spring night.
The sun rose high so soon for the nice night felt so short,
Henceforward the emperor no longer held morning court.
承欢侍宴无闲暇，
春从春游夜专夜。
后宫佳丽三千人，
三千宠爱在一身。
So occupied in revels and feasts for the emperor's delight
She toured with him each spring and served him each night.
Three thousand belles in imperial harems were well-known,
But all emperor's love and care were centered on her alone.
